Halfway between the St. Lawrence River and the NYS Thruway lies Lewis County. Bordered on the west by the Tug Hill Plateau and on the east by the Adirondack Mountains, the county is strong in agricultural development with high production in dairy farms, complete with an annual Cream Cheese Festival held in Lowville. Recreational activities include fishing, hunting, ATV riding, snowmobiling, and skiing. Lowville is also home to Kraft Foods where most of their cream cheese is made, and Quibica AMF, two of the areas largest employers. One of New York State’s largest wind farms is also located in Lowville. Maple Ridge Wind Farm runs along the Tug Hill Plateau and Martinsburg, benefiting from the constant lake effect winds and wide open land areas. Otis Technologies is based in Lyons Falls, another large employer in the area famous for the manufacturing of its gun cleaning kits that are used throughout many of our US Armed Forces.
